Waimakariri River, Multi-Day Rafting in New Zealand

Grade 1-2

This river is well known to those who have competed in the legendary Speights Coast to Coast Multisport Race. It is, however, suited to groups of all ages who want to experience the river at a more leisurely pace. The Waimakariri is one of the larger braided rivers in New Zealand. Its flows are controlled by the weather in its upper basin; the stronger and drier the Nor’West wind is on the Canterbury plains, the greater the flow, as rain seldom reaches the plains. To raft the Waimak over a couple of days is a real treat; it gives you time to take in the endlessly vast landscapes. We can assist you in putting together your own form of ‘Coast to Coast’, or merely give you the opportunity to raft this unique river.

A Typical Journey On The Waimak With Hidden Valleys

It is always best to spend the night prior to departure within close proximity to the put-in of the rafting trip: in this case, the Mt White bridge. Consequently, we recommend you stay near Arthurs Pass, as we aim to be on the river by mid morning.

Day 1

We start on an open braided section of the Waimak, before soon heading towards the hidden entrance of the gorge. While the general public find the entrance hard to access, there are no worries for us, and we often camp within the first few bends. We finish the night with a hearty meal and many campside stories.

Day 2

The river winds its way through the Gorge. On a good day, you can take a dip and float alongside the raft as we move past some amazing rock formations and drift though deep blue pools. From here we are back into the braided river until we reach the gorge bridge on Highway 72.
