"To us, trips feel like we're out doing the things we love with a group of good friends and that's exactly how it is at Hidden Valleys."

Rangitata River Day Trips

Upper Rangitata

The head waters of the Rangitata River are home to a number of famous sheep and beef stations, including Erewhon and Mesopotamia. The views are many and splendid from up here and include the Two Thumb mountain range and often the Main Divide of the Southern Alps.

Best rafted in the morning over a two to three hour period, the river in this area is Grade 1, flat and braided: the perfect way to experience the seldom seen high country from a rarely seen perspective.

In the summer months, fishing for trout and salmon is popular. Like the lower Rangitata, the Upper Rangitata is near proximity to our base at Peel Forest, so stopping here and making a day trip of it is an ideal way to safely explore and appreciate this magnificent country, while being guided by experts.

Lower Rangitata

Like the Rakaia trip, this journey is about having a paddling outing on a local, Canterbury river, and a great way for children to gain water confidence.

There are several points along the river where it’s suitable to start or finish, so we can put personalise a trip that best suits your needs and time schedule.

The river travels over an open riverbed with a few boulder garden rapids, and lots of waves. Two rafts on the river at the same time seems to promote the water fight action that is so hard to resist, so getting a group together for a few hours of river fun is a good start.

Wherever you choose to start and finish your trip, you’re only a short drive away from the Peel Forest camp ground, and café. This means that you can spend the night here beforehand, or travel on the day, knowing that good coffee and food are at hand.
