This is as good as it gets for white water Heli-Rafting action in New Zealand. The Perth is not rafted on a daily basis and often rapids must be scouted before going ahead; on occasion walking round is the only option. The Perth is a Grade 5 river with longer, white water rapids and two jagged gorges which we pass through. The river has a lot of character; the uniqueness of this trip definitely means you need to be up for a challenge, returning with a new sense of achievement and inspiration.
We start at our typical meeting point in Whataroa at 8am. The first stretch of the Perth is gentle, allowing you to take in the beautiful surroundings of native mild rain forest and dramatic mountain terrain.
We relax for lunch at spots carefully chosen with picturesque views. Your meal includes cuisine that you may be surprised to find in the outdoors.
The river then picks up the pace, shifting between abrupt waterfall style drops, created by huge rocks and bottomless blue pools, then moving into deep gorges typical of the West Coast. Both main Gorges include about an hour of rocky chutes and drops.
The Perth eventually converges into the Whataroa River, with big waves for some fun enroute to the take-out.
This trip is suitable for fitter people with a sense of outdoor adventure. You must be confident in water to safely and comfortably undertake this trip. A minimum age may apply.
All trips are subject to weather and river conditions for safety reasons. Plane and helicopter flights are weather dependent and decisions for flying conditions are made on the day.
