This is an unbelievably picturesque trip, with enough Grade 3 rapids to keep things interesting when you’re not engrossed in the spectacular scenery. Hidden Valleys offers either a day trip or a two night, three day trip. Rafting from the headwaters where the Brown Grey and Blue Grey Rivers meet, maneuvering around large boulders, passing rainforests at the river’s edge and floating through deep pools of emerald green water makes The Grey River trip the perfect way for a group or family to get some quality time in peaceful isolation. The trip is easily accessible and suits people of all ages. The versatile options and beauty of the Gentle Annie Gorge make The Grey River an irresistible option this summer.
We suggest traveling before your trip to the superb, alpine resort of Hanmer, where you can relax, soak in the hot pools and make the most of civilisation before departing into the wonderful wilderness.
Enjoy a laid-back morning before travelling to the put-in, not far from Springs Junction. We’ll get geared up while you enjoy a riverside lunch before heading off for a cruisy few kilometres through braided sections of the river and down to a camp near a large crystal clear pool perfect for swimming, fishing and exploring.
A low-key morning, leaving worries and road access to the river far behind us as we travel between the hills on open braided Grade 1-2 water. We then hit the striking Gentle Annie Gorge in the afternoon. We maneuver our way through the rock-choked river consisting of fantastic Grade 3 rapids, as waves break over the boat. Camp is usually on an island of Manuka trees, once again beside a crystal clear, deep pool of water.
A leisurely start on the river floating through the remaining open section to the entrances of two gorges, mostly flat water with stunning pools enclosed by moss and fern covered rock walls as the river winds its way through the native forest of the West Coast. Early afternoon leaves us with a couple of hours paddling through farmland to our end destination of the small West Coast town of Ikamatua.
