Rangitata Headwaters Experience

Peel Forest lies like an oasis at the end of the Canterbury Plains and is the start of a mountain range running along to the Southern Alps. Here Hidden Valleys is based at the foot of Mount Peel with views across the Canterbury Plains.

The peaks of Mount Peel, little and big, are the back drop of where Grant South (Southy) and his family live. Here there are many marked tracks to hike and for the more adventurous, the first steps of our many alpine trips of New Zealand start here.

The Rangitata River flows along the base. The lower river is great for introductory kayaking in a hard shell boat, inflatable or sit-on-top options. Great rafting for families on calm waters.

The headwaters start beyond Mesopotamia Station. Here the Prouting family have a registered air strip and a helicopter base, great for scenic flights around the Southern Alps, heli hikes and some of the best scenery and alpine trips in New Zealand. The Two Thumb mountain range is the station's boundary to the south west with the South Island's Main Divide in view. This is the point that is as close to the West Coast as the east.

There is great fishing in the spring fed streams and the main river of the Rangitata.

Through living in this area, Southy has a great rapport with the local station owners, giving us access to some stunning country and authentic bank-country huts to base ourselves from.
