Victorious Through the Rapids

Victorious Through the Rapids

What a great day out on the Landsborough with Dave Hodgson’s group from Invercargill! It started with a 4am departure from Geraldine for guides Southy, Sam and safety kayaker Owen. We picked up a Mountain Radio in Hawea and then it was on to Makarora to meet the crew and pilot from Back Country Helicopters.

As soon as you meet a group you get an idea of how the day will go, and these guys were no exception. From the start they were good natured, helpful and full of enthusiasm. Our flight in was awesome as usual. Once we were at the headwaters of the Landsborough we were surrounded by big snow capped mountains, and the weather was as clear as the waters we were rafting on. To raft the whole Landsborough in one day is not all bad … lots of rapids so we were on the move.

There were four people in each raft, husband and wife teams even with matching coloured helmets! The rapids went well with only one person having a brief swim. We stopped for lunch at Harper Bluff before departing for the flat water stretch and back to the vehicles.

Dave and his group really enjoyed being in the back country and are thinking about taking on the Waiatoto next year. Let’s do it!

Beautiful Grey River

Wednesday, April 9th, 2014

A stunning gorge

Tranquil Moments in the Gorge

It was great to get out of the office and join young couple from South Auckland for a weekend on the Grey River. Southy was on the Gear Raft and Swedish Sophie was our rafting guide. The weather played its part during the day with the rain only arriving during the night.

There are many outstanding features on this river journey – the rain forest, large boulders to manoeuvre around, deep pools of crystal clear water, fishing, and the stunning Gentle Annie Gorge. I really enjoyed the whole experience – the rafting, setting up camp, organising dinner, watching Southy cook another feast over the open fire, and chilling by the fire with a glass of wine. In the end even the sandflies didn’t get the better of me!

Anna and Michael made the trip seem like a breeze as they were always willing to pitch-in and help out, awesome!

Thanks Southy!

Aarons Uni Reunion Hike Over the Dennistoun

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

A bunch of old mates including newlyweds joined us on the Dennistoun Pass tour for a Uni reunion. The perfect way to get away from modern technologies and spend quality time with friends and family. We met the night prior for a bbq at Southys and a de-brief of what was to come; four wheel driving up the Rangitata River, home of Lord of the Rings the Two Towers and heli-rafting on the Perth. Unfortunately weather put the rafting side of this journey off.All in all thoroughly enjoyed by all how ever still a challenge which of course follows with a massive sense of achievement.

Eight North Island Farmers Fly Their Planes Down to Raft the Landsborough River

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Organiser Peter Jex Blake, a farmer from Hawkes Bay and seven other farmers from the same area flew their small planes down for a break away from the farm. We stayed at lake Ohau before setting off on the two day hike over the Broderick Pass. Others flew in by helicopter to met up with the crew for the next two days rafting. They had the time of their lives cruising around experiencing New Zealands most unique back country in a number of different forms of transport. See you all next year on the Waiatoto for some jetboating, hiking and rafting.

Paul Stevenson and His Friends Hiked the Broderick Pass and Rafted the Landsborough River

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

This trip put together by Paul..Thanks Paul from the team at Hidden Valleys, always a big job getting groups together for these outings. Slee of our Hidden Valleys Crew did a great job working with Paul on all the logistics.

Pauls group was able to work along side another group all being keen out doors people, this group catered there own trip and navigated themselves over the Main Divide of New Zealands South Island, through Brodrick Pass. Which from all accounts they did well.

The crew were all waiting with smiles on when we arrived into Creswick flat by helicopter with all the rafting gear.

The river flooded over night so there was no rush the next morning to get going. It needed a few hours to drop to a level where we felt comfortable to run the main gorge. It was early afternoon before we were at the main rapids and at those flows it was challenging enough. Our colleges from Queenstown rafting joined us for the second major rapids always good to have safety in numbers.

We had a nice river side camp and relaxing float out.

Look forward to getting out with you guys again next year on the Dennistoun Pass and Perth River, keep in touch.

Local Geraldine Farmers Hike Over the Dennistoun

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

The weather unfortunately decided to turn against us prior to the trip, dumping a load of snow for our next few days hike. It made things interesting and deffinately put the bodies to test. Hope the weather treats you better out on the farms for the long winter ahead, see you round.
