As we think about all the years that we’ve been operating around the South Island’s most remote rivers, we’ve come to the conclusion that hiking-in over mountain passes is a very rewarding and worthwhile way to experience New Zealand, which superbly complements our river rafting tours.
In some cases, such as the Ada Pass Hiking Tour, there are well formed Department of Conservation walking tracks, but we also have more difficult hikes such as the Brodrick Pass Hiking Tour which covers a range of terrain, and the Dennistoun Pass Hiking Tour, which entails route-finding over a high alpine pass where there’s permanent snow and ice.
Our experienced mountain guides allow you to embrace New Zealand’s true back country beauty, as they make the important decision-making calls in these dynamic environments.
On the other hand, if hiking and camping in these environments has been part of your upbringing and is well within your comfort range, then you may enjoy the challenge of planning and carrying out this aspect of the journey. If this is the case, feel free to join up with the Hidden Valleys’ team later, when it’s time to follow nature’s own highways out of the mountains – with river rafting!
Our alpine walking and hiking tours can be very challenging at times, but you’ll never find a more rewarding experience. A trip of this nature is very special, and especially so when sharing with friends or family.
